As Student Life Director at Manna University, I’m blessed to be able to work with our students, providing them with resources and prayer during their academic development. I also get to be involved in student leadership development through my role with the Student Government Association (SGA). While the SGA is certainly not the only way for students to develop Christian leadership skills, it can be a great opportunity for those interested in serving their fellow students through campus leadership roles.
I interviewed Sherita Brooks, our Student Body Vice President for the 2026-2027 SGA, to find out from her what it is like being part of the SGA. I was encouraged to hear that she feels she has grown as a leader and an individual from her part in the SGA. I can also gladly say that Sherita has been an instrumental part of the SGA for the past 3 years, as since becoming a student she has served in the SGA in one role or another, each time giving of her time and talent to help students get connected, whether on campus or online. Here is the interview with Sherita, in which she shared her insights, takeaways, and favorite moments from the SGA:
Q. What originally led you to run for office in the SGA?
A. I ran for office within the SGA because I really wanted to be a PART of the student body. I did not want to just go to school. I wanted to be active with like-minded people!
Q. What is your biggest takeaway/something you’ve learned from serving on the SGA?
A. My main take away from being a member of the SGA is it truly takes a village. We have students all over the world that we come along side of to reach, teach, and do school/life with. We cannot do that on our own.
Q. How has your experience serving on the SGA impacted your own leadership and ministry?
A. My serving on the SGA has impacted my leadership in so many ways to include allowing me to step into my everyday serving with confidence. It has given me insight on how to lead and how to be present in the areas that I serve in like worship. Being available when they call on me.
Q. What is your favorite part of serving on the SGA?
A. My favorite part of the SGA is being a part of the student activities. I feel connecting with the student body is very necessary so when we get together for a game night or a Zoom to pray and connect it’s that time that I enjoy the most.
Q. What is one of your favorite memories from serving on the SGA?
A. My favorite memory with the SGA, other than getting the vote of my peers was playing Taco-Cat-Goat-Cheese-Pizza with the students for the first time. We had so much fun. Brutal but fun!! Aside from that it was the game night that the President of the university took the time to show up and play games with us. You don’t get that too often.
Q. As Student Body Vice President, what are you most excited to see in this academic year at Manna U?
A. This year I am excited to see what new ideas the new President of the SGA, Dee Bowie, will bring to the table. I know she’s creative and plans well so I know she will steer us in a good direction and I’m ready to see people come alongside her and join in on the fun!
