Charisma Media interview with Dr. Crowther: Training Emerging Leaders

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP TELLS US WHAT WORKS – THEOLOGY TELLS US WHY IT WORKS

Leadership development is a growing need in the twenty-first century. “Many times, the problems we have in organizations actually can be traced to ineffective leadership or mistaken concepts of leadership.”

This applies to followers of Christ in any role where they influence others. “In reality all believers have a leadership role. The question is: just how effective are we, and how do we become more effective?” Theological studies promote growth in who we are from a divine perspective. Leadership studies promote growth in what we do in practical ways.

INSPIRATIONAL MOTIVATION: MODEL THE WAY

There is a balance between effectiveness and good leadership. The need for ethics points to character, motives, and doing the right things for the right reasons. “Whether it’s governmental, in the church, or in business, leaders tend to replicate who they are in the organization.”

FORMAL ACADEMIC TRAINING: NOT JUST INFORMATION, BUT TRANSFORMATION

Part of effective leadership is communication. “The more deeply and profoundly we understand something, the more we’re able to explain it simply to others.” The challenge for leaders is to develop skills that increase influence. “We can have the best message in the world, but if we’re not effective in communication nobody benefits.”

Leadership is also about learning how to learn. “Leaders have to continue to learn. I don’t care if you’re 94 years old, you still need to be learning about God, about theology, about scripture, about ministry, about life, about leadership, and you will continue to grow.”

The goal of formal academic training is not simply to get a degree. That is the process. “The goal is to help them find the place of ministry for them, whether it’s in the church or in the business world, that they can be sent as equipped workers into that place of ministry to fulfill the call of God in their lives and in the way that it matches up with the mission of Jesus … making disciples of all nations.”

PREPARING LEADERS FOR SUCCESS

“The soft underside of effective leadership is success.” Leaders should be mindful of this caution. “Leaders get enthralled with power and can begin to use power inappropriately. The guard against that is developing good, godly character first in the leaders before they come to these places of great leadership.”

INNOVATION IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION

Education is becoming “more student-centered rather than teacher or faculty-centered.” More attention can be given to students’ “questions, thoughts, desires for ministry, not just what the professor brings to the class.”

Innovation in distance education comes from technological improvements as well as methods. Remote learning through improved video conferencing aids in student-faculty interaction. Flipped classes allow students to study material first then come to class for discussion. These innovative methods are proving to be “more effective teaching tools. People actually learn more effectively.”

PRAYER FOR GODLY LEADERS

“Lord, I cry out to you. We need godly leaders.” “Holy Spirit I pray that you would come and bring the Word of the Lord to their heart that it’s time for them to prepare. Bring them, gather them Lord, so that they can be prepared and sent to fulfill your mission to make disciples of all nations. Thank you Lord, work in us, work in each of them I pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.”
