Admissions Insights

Whether you’re applying to college for the first time or returning to school after several years, the admissions process can feel overwhelming. If you’re considering a Christian university, you may wonder how the experience differs from that of a traditional college. The good news is that Christian university admissions often focus on more than just academic qualifications, they’re about helping you discover where God is leading you.

Throughout the application process, our admissions team seeks to understand your goals, your calling, and how Manna University might fit into God’s plan for your future. Our desire isn’t simply to enroll students; it’s to help you determine whether Manna University is where the Lord is calling you to grow academically, spiritually, and personally. If He is leading you somewhere else, we celebrate that as well.

Above all, we want what God wants for you: His very best. Our hope is that you leave the admissions process with confidence, knowing you’ve prayerfully considered the next step in your educational journey.

The purpose of this post is to provide insight, encouragement, and guidance as you navigate the Christian university admissions process.

So, what is the purpose of the admissions process? Contrary to what some may think, it isn’t simply about rejecting applicants, collecting tuition, or requiring essays just for the sake of paperwork. At Manna University, we believe admissions is an opportunity to come alongside prospective students and help them discern God’s direction for their lives.

So, what does it look like to apply to a Bible college?

Like any other university, we’ll ask for the basics: your name, your intended degree program, and your educational background. However, Christian university admissions go a step further because we care about more than your academic history. We also want to learn about your spiritual journey.

For example, we’ll ask where you attend church and whether you’re actively involved in a local church community. Are you being discipled and growing in your faith? Who is your pastor? These questions aren’t meant to evaluate your worth or determine whether you’re a “good enough” Christian. Instead, they help us understand how you’re growing spiritually and how we can best support you during your time at Manna University.

One of the most meaningful parts of the application is your personal testimony (Conversion Essay). Some applicants get a little nervous when we ask them to share their story, but everyone has one. None of us are perfect, and every believer’s story is unique. We want to hear about your life before Christ, how you came to know Him, and how He has transformed your life. We also want to know what God is doing in your life today and how He may be calling or gifting you for future ministry.

As I’ve read applicants’ conversion essays over the years, there have been moments when I’ve thought, “I think this student would thrive in a different program.” Other times, I’ve been deeply encouraged by a story or found myself relating to an applicant’s experiences. These essays help us get to know the person behind the application.

At Manna University, we don’t ask these questions to judge you. We ask them because we want to walk alongside you, help you find the program that best fits God’s calling on your life, and provide the encouragement and support you need to succeed.

Finally, the admissions process concludes with two references: a personal reference and a pastoral reference.

There is something beautiful about inviting others to speak into your life, affirm your character, and vouch for who you are. Your pastoral reference helps confirm that you’re connected to a local church community and have someone investing in your spiritual growth. While we prefer that your pastoral reference come from your pastor, we also understand that another ministry leader—such as a small group leader, ministry director, or discipleship pastor—may know you better and be able to speak to your faith journey.

One of the things I love most about reading references is seeing how others encourage and believe in our applicants. I remember walking alongside a student who was struggling and wondering if they should continue. As I talked with them, I remembered something their personal reference had written. They described the student as strong, courageous, and someone they wholeheartedly believed in. I shared those words with the student, and it became a powerful reminder that there were people in their life who were cheering them on and believed they could succeed.

Life doesn’t pause when you become a college student. Challenges arise, responsibilities grow, and there are seasons when continuing your education feels difficult. But there is something deeply biblical about finishing well and remaining faithful through life’s challenges. That’s why we value these references so much; they remind us that no one is meant to walk alone. At Manna University, we want you to know that from the very beginning of the admissions process, you have people who are praying for you, supporting you, and believing in what God can do through your life.
